What should you do if you have an accident?

• Ensure everyone's safety and check for injuries. Police must be notified if someone is injured.
• From an accident scene in Melbourne, damaged vehicles can only be towed away by a Licenced Operator authorised by the Victorian Government's Road Accident allocation Centre. Such trucks must display a TOW … number plate.
• Call BTS or the Government's Allocation Centre number on 131 176 and a tow truck will be allocated to the accident scene.
• Do not admit responsibility for the accident or get into any conflict with the other party
• Exchange details:
  
  
• Name, addresses, phone numbers
• Vehicle types and registrations
• Driver licence numbers
• Insurance companies (if any)
• Details of independent witnesses

It's common to be in shock after you have been involved in an accident and your natural decision making process could be affected. Here are a few imporatant tips that could help you:

• It is your right to have your vehicle delivered wherever you wish. DO NOT SIGN a tow docket unless your instructions are expressly shown
• Do not allow yourself to be pressured or intimidated into sending your vehicle somewhere else
• You have the right to choose who will repair your vehicle. There is a 'Cooling Off Period' of 48 hours to nominate the repairer of your choice
• It is often wise to have your vehicle towed as there may be non-apparent damage to your vehicle. Driving from an accident scene in an unroadworthy vehicle is an offense. Furthermore this may void your insurance policy should you be involved in a further accident as a result
• It is an offence to assign the task of towing a damaged vehicle other than to the Allocated Towing Operator
